Existing underfloor insulation (what we usually find)
A lot of properties already have something under the floor. The issue is most of it either doesn't last well, wasn't installed properly, or simply isn't high-performing enough for long-term comfort.
Foil insulation
Common in 70's–00's homes. It relies on reflection, so the shinier it is, the better it performs.
The problem is it quickly degrades over time - dusty, dull, torn - and loses most of its effect. Less shine means less performance.
⚠️ Foil must be removed before installing new insulation.
⚠️ It is illegal to repair foil insulation
Existing polyester blanket
One of the better things to find.
R1.5 polyester blanket is very common, often well installed and holding up well.
R2.0 is the current modern standard, and we can go higher -which we often recommend for villas and older homes.
Real talk: upgrading decent existing polyester only makes sense if the rest of the home's energy efficiency has been prioritised first.
Polystyrene (EXPOL)
Commonly in the form white or black polystyrene sheets. It has its place, but it's frequently associated with bits falling down and poor installation.
Older homes often have irregular joist spacings and awkward sections needing "puzzle work". When done poorly, you get gaps and lost performance. Value matters - sometimes it's worth replacing, sometimes it isn't.
Despite the manufacturer's claims EXPOL is rarely accepted for recyclng as it's too "dirty". This means the only method of disposal is via landfill at signficant cost.
